On a RM2,755 fridge, Atome’s three-payment plan adds RM0 if you pay on time. Shopee’s SPayLater adds RM0 at one or three months on marketplace checkouts, but RM247.95 at six months and RM495.90 at twelve. A bank 0% easy payment plan adds nothing in interest but can carry a 2% to 8% upfront processing fee, which is RM55.10 to RM220.40. The number that matters is the Flat-Rate Double: a flat monthly rate quoted on the original purchase price costs roughly twice its headline as a true annual rate, so SPayLater’s 1.5% a month works out at 36.8% a year on a twelve month plan.

Introduction

Shopee publishes its SPayLater profit rate as “1.5% per month”. On a twelve month plan that reads like 18%, and 18% on a fridge sounds survivable. The real annualised cost is 36.8%, because you keep paying that 1.5% on the full original amount in month eleven when you have already repaid most of it.

That gap between the quoted rate and the real one is the whole decision, and it is about to become a legal issue rather than a maths one, because the Consumer Credit Act 2025 requires providers to disclose an Effective Interest Rate.

This piece is for anyone standing in a showroom or at a Shopee checkout with a RM1,500 to RM3,000 appliance in the basket, deciding how to pay.

What the three routes actually are

Atome splits a purchase into three payments at 0% interest, with no credit check and a late fee of up to RM23 plus a possible RM7. SPayLater is Shopee’s in-app credit line charging a flat 1.5% monthly profit rate on tenures of six months and up, with a RM10 late charge. A bank easy payment plan converts a credit card purchase into fixed monthly instalments, usually at 0% interest but often with an upfront processing fee.

The mechanism differences decide the cost, so they are worth separating.

Atome is a short-term split. Three payments, interest-free, and the money comes from Atome rather than a bank line. Longer plans exist at partner brands “with a small fee” that Atome does not publish.

SPayLater is a revolving credit line inside Shopee with an assigned limit, operated by Monee. Shopee calls its charge a profit rate rather than interest, and states it as 1.5% per month “of the transaction amount”. That phrasing is the important part, and section 4 explains why.

A bank easy payment plan moves an existing credit card purchase into a fixed schedule. The instalment amount blocks that part of your credit limit for the term. Maybank’s EzyPay Plus, for example, ran at 0% per annum with a 0% management fee on a six month tenure, minimum RM500 and maximum RM30,000, though that campaign closed on 30 April 2026. Campaign plans come and go; the standing product usually carries a fee.

Key takeaway: only one of these three is genuinely free of charges at every tenure, and it is the shortest one. Length is what costs money.

How much does each route add to an appliance purchase?

Nothing at all on the short plans, and RM137.75 to RM495.90 on the long ones. On a RM2,755 fridge, Atome’s three payments and SPayLater’s one and three month plans add RM0. SPayLater at six months adds RM247.95 and at twelve months RM495.90. A 0% card plan with a 5% processing fee adds RM137.75.

Source: SPayLater profit rates from Shopee Malaysia’s own help centre, retrieved 22 October 2026: 1.5% per month of the transaction amount, totalling 4.5% at three months, 9% at six, 18% at twelve and 36% at twenty-four, with marketplace checkouts at 0% for three months. Atome terms from help.atome.my and atome.my, retrieved 22 October 2026. Card processing fee band of 2% to 8% as reported by RinggitPlus; Malaysian banks do not publish a single standing fee. Purchase price is the LG GN-B452PQBK 493L fridge at RM2,755 from our own refrigerator guide. Effective rates computed in a verification script before drafting.

Two things that are easy to miss in that table.

The 0% card plan is not always 0%. Processing fees run 2% to 8% depending on tenure, with longer plans attracting more. At 8% over twelve months the effective cost is 15.4%, which is worse than it looks and better than SPayLater’s long tenures.

Some smaller retailers also add a 2% to 5% surcharge for paying by instalment rather than cash, which on RM2,755 is RM55.10 to RM137.75. Larger chains such as Harvey Norman and Courts generally waive it. Ask before you commit to a route, because the surcharge can exceed the processing fee.

Key takeaway: ask the retailer two questions before choosing, the processing fee percentage and whether there is an instalment surcharge. Both are quoted per transaction and neither appears on the price tag.

Why “1.5% a month” is really 36.8% a year: the Flat-Rate Double

Because the rate is charged on the original purchase amount for the whole term, not on what you still owe. By the final month of a twelve month plan you have repaid roughly 92% of the money but are still paying the full monthly charge. Averaged across the term you are borrowing about half the original sum, so the true rate is roughly double the flat one.

We call this the Flat-Rate Double: any flat monthly rate quoted on the original purchase price costs approximately twice that rate when expressed as a true annual cost.

Shopee’s published flat profit rates converted to effective annual rates using the actual repayment schedule. Source: Flat rates published by Shopee Malaysia help centre, retrieved 22 October 2026. Effective rates derived by solving for the monthly rate that equates the purchase price to the stream of equal instalments, then annualising. Computation script run before drafting.

The multiple settles at almost exactly 2x from six months onward, which is why the rule is worth remembering rather than recalculating. A flat 1.5% a month is about 37% a year whatever tenure you pick above six months, and picking a longer tenure does not make the borrowing cheaper, it only makes the monthly smaller.

This is also why the Consumer Credit Act 2025 matters more than it first appears. Among its disclosure requirements is that providers state an Effective Interest Rate, and the Act bars promotions that describe a product as “free” or “no cost” where conditions or other fees apply. The number this section computes is the number the law is moving toward putting on the screen.

Key takeaway: when a provider quotes a monthly percentage, double it and multiply by twelve to get the honest annual cost. If that figure would stop you borrowing, the quoted one should too.

What happens if you miss a payment?

SPayLater charges RM10, or the bill principal if that is lower. Atome charges up to RM23 per overdue payment, with a possible additional RM7 depending on the funding source, applied once per overdue payment rather than per failed deduction. Card plans attract late fees reported at RM10 to RM100 and the card’s revolving rate, which can reach 18% a year.

The flat fee is what makes small BNPL baskets expensive, and the arithmetic is brutal at the bottom end.

Source: Atome Malaysia help centre, retrieved 22 October 2026: “up to RM23” per overdue payment plus a possible RM7 depending on the funding source assigned, charged once per overdue payment. Where the overdue principal is under RM23 the fee equals the amount due. Percentages computed in the verification script.

Miss all three payments on a RM300 purchase and the fees reach RM90, which is 30% of what you bought. That is the genuine risk in BNPL for appliances, and it falls hardest on the smallest purchases, which is the opposite of how people assume risk works.

Atome also blocks further use of the service until the account is brought up to date. Shopee may freeze the account and restrict vouchers.

Key takeaway: the late fee is flat, so the smaller the purchase the larger the penalty in percentage terms. If a RM300 kettle is going on BNPL, the downside is proportionally worse than on a RM3,000 fridge.

What the Consumer Credit Act 2025 changes

BNPL providers in Malaysia now need a licence from the new Consumer Credit Commission, must assess whether you can afford the repayments, must disclose an Effective Interest Rate, and cannot advertise a product as free where fees apply. Operating without authorisation carries penalties of up to RM5 million, five years’ imprisonment, or both.

The timeline is genuinely unsettled across sources, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The Edge reported licensing rules taking effect on 1 June 2026 with a six month compliance window, which would close around December 2026. RinggitPlus describes a phased rollout with Phase 2 expected in 2028. Both cannot be right about the same milestone. What is consistent across sources is the substance: licensing, affordability assessment, EIR disclosure, fair contract terms, and a Consumer Credit Tribunal that can order compensation.

On the question people actually ask, whether BNPL shows up on your credit file, the position is contested and we could not resolve it from a primary source. Claims circulating on social media that BNPL entered CCRIS in 2024 or CTOS in March 2026 are unsourced. The guides we checked state that BNPL generally does not appear on CCRIS and that the Act contains no credit reporting provision, while noting a provider could subscribe to a private bureau voluntarily.

Rather than assert either way on something that could affect a home loan, check your own file. Bank Negara provides CCRIS reports free through eCCRIS, and CTOS provides a free annual report. If you have used BNPL, look and see.

Key takeaway: do not assume BNPL is invisible to lenders. Pull your own CCRIS and CTOS reports before a mortgage application rather than relying on what a comparison site says.

Which route suits which purchase?

For anything you can clear in three months, Atome or SPayLater’s short tenures cost nothing. For a large appliance you need to spread over a year, a 0% card plan with a fee under 5% beats SPayLater’s twelve month plan by RM358.15 on a RM2,755 purchase. For anyone without a credit card, the honest answer on long tenures is to wait and save.

When none of these is the right answer

This is the section that argues against the premise of the article.

Instalment plans do not make an appliance cheaper. They move when you pay and, on the long tenures, add 9% to 18% to the price. If the reason for spreading the cost is that the purchase does not fit the month, the question worth asking first is whether a cheaper unit fits instead. On the fridge example, the gap between the RM2,755 LG and a 404L Samsung at RM2,095 is RM660, which is more than SPayLater’s twelve month charge. Buying the smaller fridge outright beats financing the larger one.

There is also a genuine case against our own comparison. A 0% card plan is only cheap if you clear the card in full every month anyway. If a balance is already revolving at 18% a year, adding an instalment plan on top does not help, because the blocked limit reduces your headroom and the revolving balance keeps compounding.

And if the appliance has not failed yet, waiting two months and paying cash costs nothing, which no route in the table above can match.

For big-ticket items the comparison also runs wider than instalments. Rental is a fourth route, and on appliances it generally totals 2.0 to 2.7 times buying outright, which our breakdown of what aircon rental totals over five years sets out plan by plan. Our pillar guide on buying appliances outright, on rental or by instalment covers how the four routes compare across categories.

How to choose in five steps

  1. Ask the retailer for the instalment surcharge. It runs 2% to 5% at smaller outlets and is usually waived at the big chains. It is quoted separately from the bank’s fee.
  2. Ask the bank for the processing fee percentage on your tenure. It is 2% to 8%, and it is the entire cost of a “0%” plan.
  3. Double any monthly rate. A flat 1.5% a month is about 37% a year. Apply the Flat-Rate Double before you agree to a tenure.
  4. Check the late fee against your basket size. RM23 on a RM300 purchase is 7.67%.
  5. Price the next size down. On our fridge example, dropping one capacity band saved RM660, which exceeds the cost of every financing route in this article.

Red flag: a plan quoted only as a monthly ringgit figure with no tenure, no rate and no fee. Under the Consumer Credit Act 2025 providers must disclose an Effective Interest Rate, so a seller who cannot give you a percentage is a seller to walk away from.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SPayLater interest free in Malaysia?

Only at the short tenures. Shopee charges 0% on one month plans and 0% on three month marketplace checkouts, but the three month rate still applies to ShopeeFood, insurance, prepaid, bills and tickets. From six months the profit rate is 1.5% per month of the transaction amount, which totals 9% at six months and 18% at twelve.

What is the Flat-Rate Double?

A flat monthly rate quoted on the original purchase price costs roughly twice that rate as a true annual cost, because you keep paying on money you have already repaid. SPayLater’s 1.5% a month works out at 36.8% a year effective on a twelve month plan. The multiple settles at about 2x for every tenure of six months or longer.

How much is Atome’s late fee?

Up to RM23 per overdue payment, with a possible additional RM7 depending on the funding source Atome assigns. It is charged once per overdue payment rather than for each failed deduction, and where the overdue principal is under RM23 the fee equals the amount due. Atome blocks further use until the account is current.

Is a 0% credit card instalment plan really 0%?

The interest usually is, but the plan can carry an upfront processing fee of 2% to 8% of the purchase, which is RM55.10 to RM220.40 on RM2,755. Genuinely fee-free plans exist as campaigns; Maybank’s EzyPay Plus ran at 0% interest with a 0% management fee before that promotion closed on 30 April 2026.

Does BNPL affect my CCRIS or loan application in Malaysia?

The position is contested and we could not confirm it from a primary source. Guides state BNPL generally does not appear on CCRIS, while social media claims say otherwise. Check directly rather than assume: Bank Negara provides free CCRIS reports via eCCRIS, and CTOS provides a free annual report.

What is the minimum spend for these plans?

SPayLater sets RM1 for one, three, six and twelve month plans, RM200 for eighteen and twenty-four months for selected users, and RM1,000 for thirty-six and forty-eight months on selected campaigns. Bank plans are higher: Maybank EzyPay Plus required RM500 minimum against a RM30,000 maximum, and HSBC is reported at RM300.
