  • Verified Malaysian prices run RM1,029 for a 200L two-door to RM11,025 for a 650L six-door. The useful band for most households sits between RM1,500 and RM3,700.
  • Malaysia’s energy label does not cover every fridge. Suruhanjaya Tenaga’s guidelines rate single-door and two-door units only, and explicitly exclude French door, side-by-side and anything with more than two doors. We call this the Third Door, and it matters because retailer sizing guides push larger households straight into the unrated configurations.
  • Our pick for a family of four to five is the LG GN-B452PQBK at RM2,755 for 493L. For five to seven people who still want a regulated label, the Sharp SJP701MFMK at RM3,699 is the largest labelled fridge we found at 670L.
  • A four-door at the same capacity costs RM8,905 and up, which is 2.6 to 3.1 times the price per litre of that Sharp, and carries no Malaysian star rating.
  • Running cost is smaller than most buyers assume: RM102 to RM169 a year at the current tariff, depending on size. The inverter versus non-inverter gap is RM67 to RM111 a year.
  • Renting is poor value here. LG Subscribe fridge plans total RM5,550 to RM16,095 over five years against RM2,599 to RM3,699 to buy outright.

A 609L four-door Electrolux costs RM8,905 at Harvey Norman. A 670L two-door Sharp costs RM3,699 at the same capacity class. The larger, cheaper one is also the only one of the two that carries a Malaysian energy rating, because the regulation stops at two doors.

Quick Primer: What the Malaysian Energy Label Actually Covers

Three terms get used loosely in this category, and the difference decides whether the sticker on the door means anything.

MEPS is the Minimum Energy Performance Standard set by Suruhanjaya Tenaga. The minimum for sale is 2 stars.

SRI, the Star Rating Index, is the metric for refrigerators. It compares a unit’s measured efficiency against the average for its adjusted volume, expressed as a percentage: 5 stars is +25% or better, 3 stars is the average band from minus 10% to plus 10%, and 1 star is minus 35% to minus 25%.

Scope is the part nobody mentions. The guidelines cover refrigerators with “one door or two door” only. Clause 2.1.2 excludes “French door/side by side door/more than 2-door refrigerator,” along with built-in-only units and anything under 60 litres.

Does every refrigerator in Malaysia carry an energy star rating?

No. Only single-door and two-door refrigerators fall within Malaysia’s MEPS scheme. French door, side-by-side and any unit with more than two doors are explicitly excluded by clause 2.1.2 of the Suruhanjaya Tenaga guidelines, so they carry no regulated Malaysian star rating at all.

This is the Third Door, and it creates a gap exactly where buyers are least equipped to notice it.

Household capacity bands as published by a major Malaysian retailer, mapped against MEPS scope. Source: Capacity bands from the Senheng fridge size guide, retrieved 11 October 2026. Scope from Suruhanjaya Tenaga, Guidelines on Energy-Using Product GP/ST/No.50/2024, clause 2.1, retrieved 11 October 2026 and corroborated against the IEA policy record for the same instrument.

The practical consequence shows up in how this category is written about. Malaysia’s top-ranking refrigerator listicle lists ten models, awards “5 star” ratings to several of them, and the majority of those are side-by-side or four-door units. Those configurations cannot hold a Malaysian 5-star rating, because the scheme does not rate them. Whatever those stars refer to, it is not MEPS.

It shows up in rental too. Of the nine LG Subscribe refrigerator models listed by an agent site on 11 October 2026, seven are side-by-side or French door. Two are top freezers. Choosing the subscription route puts you in unrated territory roughly four times out of five.

Key takeaway: if a seller quotes a star rating on a three-door, four-door, French door or side-by-side fridge, ask which scheme issued it. The Malaysian one did not.

How We Ranked This List

Four criteria, in order of weight.

  1. A verified Malaysian ringgit price, retrieved 11 October 2026 from Harvey Norman Malaysia or esh2u. No price, no entry.
  2. Capacity matched to a stated household band, so the list answers the sizing question rather than ranking brands against each other.
  3. Price per litre within its configuration class. We computed this for all 35 models in our price sample and ranked within type, not across types.
  4. MEPS scope, stated for every entry. Being unrated is not disqualifying, because some unrated models are excellent value. Not knowing is the problem.

What disqualified an entry: no published Malaysian price, or capacity figures that contradicted themselves between the product title and the specification block, which happened on several models we checked.

Disclosure: Cravings in Malaysia publishes this list, earns nothing from any brand on it, and holds no affiliate arrangement with any retailer named. We did not test these units. Rankings use published prices and published specifications only, which is a real limitation on a category where compressor noise and drawer quality matter and cannot be read off a spec sheet.

Top 9 Refrigerators in Malaysia by Household Size

Midea MDRT267MTB30, 200L two-door

1. Midea MDRT267MTB30, 200L two-door, RM1,029

Fits: one person, or a studio kitchen.

The cheapest unit in our sample that is still a proper two-door with a separate freezer compartment, and it sits inside MEPS scope so the star rating on it is a real one. At RM5.15 per litre it is mid-pack on value, which is normal at the small end where the compressor and cabinet costs do not scale down.

Samsung RT31CG5022B1ME, 305L two-door

2. Samsung RT31CG5022B1ME, 305L two-door, RM1,569

Fits: one to two people, or a couple who shop weekly.

Reduced from RM2,399 at esh2u. SpaceMax insulation lets Samsung hold more internal volume inside the same footprint, which matters in a condo kitchen where the gap between cabinets is fixed. Labelled.

LG GN-B332PMGB, 360L two-door top freezer

3. LG GN-B332PMGB, 360L two-door top freezer, RM1,871

Fits: two to three people.

RM5.20 per litre, reduced from RM2,399. LG lists this one in three finishes at two different prices, with Clay Mint and Clay Pink at RM1,871 and Nature Beige at RM2,099 for the same 360L cabinet. The colour costs RM228. Labelled.

Samsung RT38CG6444B1ME, 404L two-door top mount

4. Samsung RT38CG6444B1ME, 404L two-door top mount, RM2,095

Fits: three to four people.

The best price per litre in the mainstream family band at RM5.19, down from RM3,499. A near-identical Bespoke variant at 404L sells for RM2,299, so check which one the showroom is quoting. Labelled.

LG GN-B452PQBK, 493L top freezer

5. LG GN-B452PQBK, 493L top freezer, RM2,755

Fits: four to five people. Our pick for the median Malaysian household.

493L is the sweet spot where capacity stops being the constraint for most families and price per litre is still RM5.59. LG sells this cabinet in four finish codes between RM2,649 and RM2,755, which is a RM106 spread for identical storage. Labelled, which at this size is no longer guaranteed.

Electrolux ETM5002C-B, 503L top freezer

6. Electrolux ETM5002C-B, 503L top freezer, RM3,009

Fits: four to five people who want a bottom-mounted compressor and a deeper crisper.

RM5.98 per litre, the priciest of our labelled family picks, and worth it only if you value the 700 Series build. Reduced from RM3,399.

Sharp SJP701MFMK, 670L two-door

7. Sharp SJP701MFMK, 670L two-door, RM3,699

Fits: five to seven people. The largest labelled fridge in our sample.

This is the entry that justifies the whole article. At 670L it matches four-door cabinets on storage, it costs RM3,699 against RM8,905 and up for those, and because it has two doors it sits inside MEPS and carries a regulated rating. If you want maximum capacity without leaving the labelling scheme, this is close to the only route we found.

Hisense RS666N4ACNIV, 620L side-by-side

8. Hisense RS666N4ACNIV, 620L side-by-side, RM2,599

Fits: five to seven people on a budget. No Malaysian energy rating.

The best price per litre in the entire sample at RM4.19, reduced from RM3,499. Side-by-side turns out to be the cheap configuration in Malaysia, not the premium one, and three near-identical Hisense 620L variants sit between RM2,599 and RM3,099. The trade-off is real and worth stating plainly: you save RM1,100 against the Sharp above and you give up the ability to compare its efficiency against anything.

Electrolux EQE6879A-B, 609L four-door

9. Electrolux EQE6879A-B, 609L four-door, RM8,905

Fits: a household that wants the four-door format and has the budget. No Malaysian energy rating.

Reduced from RM10,999, and representative of its class rather than an outlier: the 604L to 605L LG and Bosch four-doors sit at RM9,005 and RM9,105. At RM14.62 per litre this is 2.6 times the Sharp’s rate for 61 litres less space. You are buying the format, the finish and the flexible middle drawers, not storage.

How much does a refrigerator cost to run in Malaysia?

Between RM102 and RM169 a year for a modern unit, depending on capacity, at the domestic tariff of 44.43 sen per kWh. An older fridge runs RM200 to RM267. The inverter versus non-inverter gap is RM67 to RM111 a year, which is RM666 to RM1,111 over a decade.

CapacityHouseholdkWh a yearCost at 44.43 sen
350 to 399L2 to 3230 to 280RM102 to RM124
400 to 450L4260 to 310RM116 to RM138
451 to 550L4 to 5280 to 330RM124 to RM147
551 to 650L5 or more320 to 380RM142 to RM169
Older unitsany450 to 600RM200 to RM267

Two things follow that cut against how this category is usually sold.

The first is that running cost is not where fridge money is won or lost. The entire annual electricity bill for a 600L fridge is RM169. The price gap between the labelled Sharp and an equivalent four-door is RM5,206, which is 31 years of that fridge’s electricity. Buying a four-door to save energy is not a calculation that closes.

The second is that the label still matters, for a different reason. Within the two-door class you can compare a 3-star against a 5-star and know what you are getting, because SRI is defined against adjusted volume rather than raw litres, so a big efficient fridge and a small efficient fridge can both earn five stars honestly. Step outside the scheme and that comparison is simply unavailable to you, at any price.

Should you rent a refrigerator in Malaysia instead?

Not on these numbers. LG Subscribe fridge plans run RM80 to RM290 a month on five and seven year terms, totalling RM5,550 to RM16,095, against RM2,599 to RM3,699 to buy a comparable fridge outright. CUCKOO, which does offer water purifiers, air purifiers and air conditioners on rental, does not sell refrigerators in Malaysia, and neither do Coway, Gintell or Ogawa.

The 493L top freezer is the cleanest comparison available, because we have the same capacity class on both routes. Renting it costs RM5,550 over five years. Buying the LG GN-B452PQBK at 493L costs RM2,755. That is 2.01 times, for an appliance with no filters to change and no scheduled servicing to speak of.

That ratio is the real difference between this category and water treatment. We argued in our comparison of water purifiers outright versus rental that rental earns its premium where consumables must be replaced on schedule or the product stops working. A fridge has no equivalent. The same arithmetic ran against rental in our breakdown of what aircon rental totals over five years, where the multiple was 2.0 to 2.7 times, and a fridge has even less bundled service to justify it.

Note also that the seven year term on the GC-B257KLJR has a lower monthly, RM85 against RM105, and a higher total, RM6,636 against RM5,676. The cheaper-looking plan costs RM960 more.

Key takeaway: if cash flow is the constraint, a 0% instalment plan on a RM2,755 fridge beats every subscription here. Our pillar guide on buying big-ticket appliances outright, on rental or by instalment sets out when each route wins.

How to pick the right refrigerator size in Malaysia

Six questions, in the order they matter.

  1. How many people eat from it, and do you shop weekly or daily? Weekly shoppers should take the next band up. Daily market shoppers can stay a band down.
  2. What is the narrowest point of the delivery route? Not the kitchen gap, the route: lift doors, corridor turns, the staircase. A 670L cabinet that cannot reach the kitchen is a return.
  3. Can the doors open fully where it will stand? Side-by-side exists largely to solve this, because each door swings half as far as a wide single door.
  4. Is it inside MEPS scope? One or two doors, yes. Three or more, French door or side-by-side, no.
  5. What is the price per litre? Divide the price by the capacity. Under RM5.50 is good in any class. Over RM10 means you are buying the format.
  6. Which exact finish code is quoted? We found RM106 to RM228 differences between colours of the same cabinet across three brands.

Red flag: a salesperson quoting a star rating on a four-door or side-by-side unit. The Malaysian scheme does not rate those, so the number came from somewhere else, and nobody we asked could say where.

Frequently Asked Questions About Refrigerators in Malaysia

What size fridge do I need for a family of 4 in Malaysia?

Between 400L and 450L for a household of four that shops weekly, or 250L to 450L across the wider three-to-four-person band. Expect to pay RM2,095 to RM2,755 for a two-door in that range, and about RM116 to RM138 a year to run it. Step up to 493L if you batch cook or freeze.

What is the Third Door?

The Third Door is the point where a Malaysian refrigerator leaves the energy labelling scheme. Suruhanjaya Tenaga rates single-door and two-door units only; clause 2.1.2 excludes French door, side-by-side and any unit with more than two doors. A three-door or four-door fridge carries no regulated Malaysian star rating.

How much does a good refrigerator cost in Malaysia in 2026?

RM1,029 to RM11,025 across the market. The practical band is RM1,500 to RM3,700, which covers 305L to 670L. Four-door and French door models start near RM8,900 at 600L. Side-by-side is the cheapest per litre at around RM4.19, and multi-door the dearest at RM14.62 to RM16.96.

Is an inverter refrigerator worth it in Malaysia?

Yes, on a long enough view. Inverter units draw 250 to 350 kWh a year against 400 to 600 for non-inverter, which at 44.43 sen is a saving of RM67 to RM111 a year, or RM666 to RM1,111 across a decade. That comfortably exceeds the typical price difference, and inverter compressors also run quieter in open-plan condo kitchens.

Can I put a refrigerator in a kitchen cabinet recess?

Only if the manufacturer’s ventilation clearance is respected on all sides and at the rear, and note that units “designed exclusively for built-in use” are excluded from the Malaysian energy scheme for that reason. Measure handles, hinges and any water connection as part of total depth, not just the cabinet body.

Do I still need a separate freezer if I buy a large fridge?

Usually not below six people. A 493L two-door gives roughly 120L to 150L of freezer space, which covers most households. A chest freezer makes sense for bulk buying, home catering or a household of seven or more, and costs RM929 to RM1,079 for 188L based on current Malaysian listings.
